Discussions > Squid Mackerel Butterfish Ongoings from Jason Didden
Greetings All – A few items of note…
Mackerel Limited Access - In order to fish for, possess or land mackerel after March 1, 2012, a vessel must be issued one of three different limited access mackerel permits, or a new open access mackerel permit. Each permit type has different eligibility requirements and different restrictions. Vessel owners that would like to be issued one of the new limited access mackerel permits by March 1, 2012, will need to submit an application by January 31, 2012. See http://www.nero.noaa.gov/nero/hotnews/AtlMackLAP/ for more details… There are some issues popping up with the vessel hold survey certification process for the Tier 1/2 participants…more on that sometime soon but it’s not required for the initial application…
Here’s some interesting work going on with butterfish bycatch: http://ecologyofcoastaloceanseascapes.blogspot.com/2011/11/butterfish-smackdown-i-little.html AND http://www.maracoos.org/node/183

Finally, I just submitted a draft EIS to NMFS for review for Amendment 14 (river herring/shad non-target catch monitoring, reduction, conservation)…it’s still looking like hearings sometime in March and final Council action in April (Duck, NC) which would facilitate any chosen alternatives becoming effective by Jan 1, 2013.
All for now, hope your Holidays are happy & safe! Jason
P.S. Thanks to folks who took the Visioning survey (http://www.mafmc.org/vision/) after my last email…we saw a nice spike in completed surveys not long afterward! The survey is still up if you haven’t taken it…
